Shares Assets Valuation
HM Revenue & Customs' (HMRC) Shares, Assets and Valuation (SAV) is part of its Charity Assets and Residence (CAR) Department.
Shares, Assets and Valuation (SAV) leads and enquiries and negotiations on the value of the following types of assets: -
- Unquoted shares and securities;
- Goodwill;
- Chattels, works of art etc;
- Overseas residential property;
- Ships, aircraft, caravans etc;
- Bloodstock/Livestock;
- Patents/Copyright;
- Know-how/Intellectual Property; and
- Rights to deferred consideration from other disposals.
Most cases we have been involved in have been settled by negotiation. This is always our aim. However, resolution sometimes cannot be achieved with the SAV Case Officer and the case needs to be considered for referral to the dedicated SAV Appeals Team. That team decides whether HMRC should negotiate further or obtain an opinion from an external, independent expert.
It should be noted, however, that the valuation of unquoted UK shares and securities for Capital Gains Tax purposes is a matter for a Tax Tribunal.
