Charity Assets and Residence (CAR) Investigations

HM Revenue & Customs' (HMRC) Charity Assets and Residence (CAR) Department is made up of several different business areas, including: -

  • High Net Worth Unit who deal with and enquire into the tax affairs of HMRC's wealthiest individual customers;
  • Residency who are responsible for dealing with and enquiring into the tax affairs of non-resident individuals, co-coordinating enquiries into a number of Double Taxation claims, non-resident trusts and the transfer of assets abroad legislation
  • Inheritance Tax who deal with and enquire into the tax affairs of deceased persons;
  • Capital Gains who are responsible for dealing with and enquiring into more complex Capital Gains Tax issues;
  • Trusts/Charities who deal with and enquire into Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax issues surrounding UK resident trusts and other direct and indirect tax issues faced by charities and charity controlled companies;
  • Foreign Entertainers Unit, which is a specialist team focussing on the UK tax liabilities of non-UK resident entertainers and sportspersons who appear in the UK;
  • Employee Shares and Securities Unit, which is a specialist team responsible for the Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions treatment of 'equity remuneration' (e.g. shares and securities options and award schemes); and
  • Shares, Assets and Valuation who lead enquiries and negotiations on the valuation of unquoted shares and other assets (e.g. copyrights, goodwill, bloodstock, chattels, foreign land etc).
