MP's issue "damning indictment" of HMRC settlementsDate:20 December 2011 Summary: MP's on the Public Accounts Committee published a report on 20 December 2011 regarding the handling of tax disputes by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Margaret Hodge said that the report was "a damning indictment of HMRC and the way its senior officials handle tax disputes with large corporations". The report argues that there are specific and systemic problems in the way HMRC approaches disputes, with particular criticism of the way it negotiates and settles disputes with large businesses. It claims that HMRC has left itself open to accusation that its relationship with the businesses is "too cosy". The report also states that HMRC must ensure that revised procedures to separate the roles of those involved in settling tax disputes are followed, amid concerns that senior officials were able to both negotiate and then sign off settlements. It also recommends that all proposed settlements of over £100m plus a sample of those over £10m should be reviewed by an independent assessor. HMRC has hit back by claiming that the report is based on "partial information, inaccurate opinion and some misunderstanding of facts". Whilst HMRC acknowledges that an error was made in the Goldman Sachs case, it denies that this is the result of systemic failures. How can OneE TDI help?
